Story

The lines that make up the motifs are carved into the material by hand with a graver. With this technique the curves can be picked out by playing with the depth of the line. Depending on the subject to be reproduced, relief engraving can demand over a week’s work. The engraver hollows out around the element which he wishes to leave in relief. Using various gravers, he sculpts a true bas-relief in the metal. Foreground, middle ground and sometimes even a background bring life to portraits, or drawings of animals or plants.
